Sound for increased safety

The silence of electric vehicles is highly appreciated by most drivers, passengers and people outside the vehicle. But in some situations a warning sound is required in order to increase safety for people in front of the vehicle. Electric and hybrid vehicles warning sound, AVAS Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System

In USA, the Pedestrian Safety Enhancement Act that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) proposed on July 7, 2011 is ”the first major step towards regulations that will protect unsuspecting pedestrians and the visually-impaired from accidents involving hybrid and electric vehicles.” “The alert sound must not require activation by the driver or the pedestrian, and must allow pedestrians to reasonably detect an EV or HV in critical operating scenariossuch as, but not limited to, constant speed, accelerating, or decelerating. Sound specifications would include criteria for sounds to be detectable and recognizable as the sound of a motor vehicle in operation. “

European Parliament legislative resolution of 6 February 2013 on the proposal for a regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on the sound level of motor vehicles: ”Manufacturers shall install AVAS in vehicles. The sound to be generated by the AVAS shall be a continuous sound that provides information to pedestrians and vulnerable road users of a vehicle in operation. The sound shall be easily indicative of vehicle behaviour and should sound similar to the sound of a vehicle of the same category equipped with an internal combustion engine, and operating under the same conditions, and the requirements of Annex IX shall be fulfilled.” ” The sound to be generated by the AVAS must be easily indicative of vehicle behaviour and direction of travel , for example, through the automatic variation of sound level or characteristics in synchronization with vehicle speed.”

Japan: “In January 2010 the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism in Japan issued guidelines for hybrid and other near-silent vehicles. It is found that warning sounds with similar characteristics as engine sounds are the best countermeasures against these risks“

The main idea with the warning sound is that a person at risk should immediately perceive the situation and be able to take the right action in order to avoid a dangerous situation. A realistic engine sound will have that effect while a synthetic sound need to be analyzed first, causing a delay that can be fatal.

The SoundRacer technology is developed to give a realistic sound impression indicating if the vehicle is idling, accelerating, decelerating or cruising. The different sound characters and sound volume is determined from information about the actual speed of the vehicle and rate of speed change.

The sound will give people in the surrounding the best possible chance to determine the behavior of an approaching electric vehicle.
